What is this bird?

Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? The feeder is approx. 8" tall. This is in Southeast Michigan if that helps.

Black-crowned night heron?

I am guessing this is a juvenile black-crowned night heron, but I have my doubts. Does anyone know what this bird is? I shot the photo in Roseville, California, in a pond on a golf course. Many other herons and egrets frequent the area.
