it could be just a bad/blown head gasket(burned from heat & pressure), which is a fairly easy fix. If you take it apart for gasket fix, run a fingernail along cylinder wall to check for deep scratches that will also cause poor compression, if they are felt easily it needs to be re-bored and have new rings/probably pistons,good luck.
