Question

Description:

I took this photo on a pond on our property, seconds after it went underwater and did not come back up. I think it was a duck, my husband thinks different. Anyone have any other ideas?

It's a tough angle, but it's probably a loon. They can stay under water for a really long time and can swim fast enough to catch fish.

Yes, it looks like a loon to me, too.

the wake might be to big for a loon.

In the south theres also the cormorant, that fishes in the same way as a loon.

Looks more like a muskrat. I enlarged the photo as much as possible with any resolution and it does not look like feathers, but more like muskrat fur of an animal that's moving away.

Definitely a fury animal. It just looks like a collie sheepdog, black and white, but I doubt if it would dive for any length of time or could it be a raccoon? I have never seen a muskrat (or a raccoon) but pictures do not show any white on them.
