Orange Signs

Over recent years I have noticed these posts appearing in fields and hedgerows around England. The posts are about 2.5 metres tall and have a pair of orange faces that sit on either side with the face at 45 degrees to the ground so that the orange face points in an upward direction. I am not sure if this is coincidental, but I have noticed the posts in locations immediately under the approach path of aircraft to major airports. This picture was taken about 10 miles to the North East of Manchester Airport. Does anyone know if they are somehow connected with aircraft navigation? And, if so, how do they work?
